Terri Dwyer to star in Alan Ayckbourn's Absent Friends at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage
A trio of renowned TV faces will take the lead in an Alan Ayckbourn play coming to Stevenage.
Former Hollyoaks star Terri Dwyer, ex-EastEnders actor Joel Beckett and The Bill’s DC Mickey Webb, played by Chris Simmons, will appear in Absent Friends at the Gordon Craig Theatre.
The show centres on characters at a tea party that has been organised for a man whose fiancée has drowned and rehearsals began last week.
Terri, 40, said: “It’s very intense.
“We only have a couple of weeks’ rehearsal and it’s going at quite a quick pace.
“It’s really good and the cast are really lovely.
“Joel and I have crossed paths before.
“Chris has the same agent as me but it’s the first time we’ve worked together.”
The married mum of two was only recently at the Gordon Craig, when she starred in The Vagina Monologues last September.
She said: “Although I loved the Monologues, I was ready to do a play with a start, middle and end.
“It’s nice to see the character go all the way through her journey.”
Terri plays Diana, who rightly suspects her husband of having an affair with his business partner’s wife.
The actress said: “She’s as batty as a box of frogs but I adore her.
“She’s got really interesting relationships with the other people in the play.”
Terri shares Diana’s passion for wanting everything just so and “dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s”, but that’s where the similarities end.
She said: “I wouldn’t stay in the relationship she has with her husband.
“I think women today have it better than in the 70s, when this was set.”
It is the first time Terri has tackled a play by Ayckbourn.
She is pleased to be back at the Gordon Craig.
She said: “I love Stevenage and I love the people.
“The audience was brilliant last time and I’m looking forward to playing to them again.
“I hope people enjoy watching the play as much as we enjoy performing it.
“It’s a real mix of comedy and drama.”
After the show ends, Terri will embark on a radio play and has other projects in the pipeline.
She said: “Because I was busy with the Monologues, I missed a lot of auditions, but it’s been a great start to the year and hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.”
The show will run from Wednesday February 5 to Saturday February 8 at 7.45pm, with 2.30pm performances on Thursday and Saturday.
“Tickets cost £12.50, £19.50 or £16, with the afternoon performances priced at £17.50.
